From the Ocean's Depths to Your Jewelry Box: The Magical Journey of Akoya Pearls

Known as one of the world's most beautiful and high-graded pearl, the Japanese Akoya pearl is a saltwater cultured pearl from the Akoya oyster: Pinctada fucata martensii.

Akoya pearls are renowed for their luster, beauty, and classic elegance. They are prized for their perfectly round shape, high-quality nacre, and stunning colors that range from white and cream to pink-ish silver.

The journey of how these timeless pearls are formed by mother nature alone is magical.

They are formed when a foreign substance, such as a grain of sand or a piece of tissue, enters the oyster's soft tissue through its shell. This foreign substance irritates the oyster, causing it to produce nacre, a substance made up of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, to cover the irritant and protect the oyster's soft tissue. As layers of nacre build up over time, a pearl is formed.

The process takes around 10-24 months, during which the Akoya oyster is carefully tended to in our Japanese pearl farms to ensure the quality and size of the pearl.

Take a look into the journey behind every piece of our collection, professionally cultured and farmed in the Shikoku Island, Japan:

In addition to their beauty and elegance, Akoya pearls also have a rich cultural and historical significance. They are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and have been used for centuries in traditional jewelry designs and as gifts for important occasions such as weddings and births.
